Tolkien's languages in use

Wow, that was really interesting. Especially the link at the bottom of the page that explained some quotes in the different languages.

It gets better!!! :D

Use the link from the first page, go to the bottom of the movie quotes page, click 'back'!!! :D

So much to look at!!!

I'm lost... don't try to find me... this is too much fun... :p

*runs off giggling*

My own use of words thus far...:D

"nad uin morgul gerich na lin fea"

or...

"din no"

------------------------------lost? ;)

"something from the black arts you have in your spirit"

or...

"be silent"
------------------------------better? There's more where that came from!!

"lasto mellon nin" - 'listen my friend'

If you have or know of any good words or whatever, please let me hear about them! And feel free to post to let my know what you think... :D

Ooook...

If anyone is interested in posting, it's fine by me... I hope you like having this to look at, but it is rather quiet around here...

I would invite anyone that knows how to translate any of the languages to give some advice to those of us who would like to learn, hear or just know some of the words. Please? :)

(I'm all alone in my own little thread... :( ) :D

You are not alone;) What exactly about languages are you interested in? There are just too much stuff in the Web about it. You probably know this site http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/ - it is probably the most known Tolkien languages site in the net. I also like this http://www.forodrim.org/daeron/md_home.html - a very serious one. But it's probably more for those who try to learn languages really seriously (it is difficult, after all:eek: ), but there are lots of more easy-to-understand sites:D

Very cool! :D Thanks for posting!

I'll definitely have to spend some time going through that first one, and the second looks rather interesting as well.

THANK YOU!!! :D

Thank you for saying so good sir. I hope you enjoy learning a few things here! :D

*Looks around* wow. :( Not many others have bothered to tell me what they think... even if it's just to say how much they hate me putting this link on here! :D

Ohhhh, why do the EVIL people not reply to this thread? I just finally noticed it (in all honesty I just accidentally clicked the link in your siggy, Ara   ), and I think the prayers are absolutely beautiful, and although I don't intend to listen to this recording since I remember the line from another Tyler interview any clip of her speaking Elvish is priceless. One thing she did really well most of the time was her voice, and more so when speaking Elvish.

I'm trying to find a little spare time to read the Quenya course from ardalambion.com That site seems to be pretty good, so there's another resource for those interested, assuming it still exists. (The name itself is Elvish for "tongues of Arda")

Um, some of my favorite words from the Elven tongues are Quenya "Aiya", behold; "Namárië", farewell; "lomelindë", nightingale (the O might be long in that word, can't recall); "mornië", darkness; "laure", gold; Ugh, I can't remember for sure, something like "lassalanta" means Autumn, or literally "leaf-fall", I always thought that was really pretty. In Sindarin "galad", light; "celeb", silver; "lasto", listen (beat me to it, Ara ;)); "daro", stop; "miaulin", cat (female), and of course, "mellon", friend.

Specifically from the prayers I liked...well, as soon as I tried to pick me favs I realized if I kept at it I'd end up copying most of it here, so it would be pointless. But I guess top fav goes to násie, it's just so musical sounding, the perfect way to end or sum up anything.

So right now, I'm just going to say, Násie.

Now I feel rather silly. This went so long without anyone posting that I had almost forgotten about it. Thanks for stopping in HG! I really hope you like it. I haven't really learned all that many words yet, but I'm still going at it! :D

Hannon le, nin heri. *bows*

While I find almost any fan use of Tolkien's language material commendable due to the inspirational joy involved, it is also worth noting that in "actual" Sindarin the word for "lady" is hiril (D. Salo has [!]híril); heri is Quenya, as in herinya "my lady".

The possessive adjectives or pronouns (nín, lín, etc.) also tend to follow the noun in Sindarin. In the rare/poetic preceding position, the adjective would cause soft mutation to the noun (just as in Welsh), as Sarn Gebir* seems to show. There is also mellyn în phain which gives reason to believe that p- from older *KW- would rather change to ph- after an adjectival word.**

* Silm. App.; cebir "spikes > spikery" is treated as a collective (singular) noun -- sarn "stony" is singular -- as also in the pairs Eryn Galen, Eryn Vorn (Unfinished Tales Index).

** Provided that ph- has nothing to with a nasal effect somehow caused by în (< older *-na or *-nja).

 Thank you. As I am sure I have said, I am not very far into learning and really only just play with the few words I do know. I find it an interesting language and have fun finding simple translations for some of the things I write (poems and in RPs mainly). I'm afraid I have far too flitting a mind to really learn anything such as this, but there are a few things that are starting to stick. :)

wow. Been a while since I went to that sight. Still looking cool.

I'm sorry to say that I'm yet no farther then I ever was in any ability and/or knowledge of the elven languages. Want to work on it. Would love to know a bit more of it. Really would like to be able to use it well enough to weave a little into some of my writing and such... But time is tighter then it was and I have lost my note book. :( I know I'd have a good chance of finding it if I really looked but... well, time again. Add in a mysterious (though slight) lack of will, mix in a crazy array of other activities and bake at 24/7 until you get a fine layer of dust. Serve as hot or cold as you like; it's not like it's going anywhere.

 :)

I lost my note-book too, and look what happened!

Yes. Yes I did read that. Sorry. But it's good to hear it's been taken care of.

Mine wasn't much like that though. Just a collection of quotes and almost random words. I didn't ever put anything 'incriminating' in there.

:D
