What 📔book are you reading right now?

[Squint-eyed Southerner]

I have it, but haven't read it yet. Better put it next on the list.

The author of Volsunga Saga brought in, and tried to reconcile, elements from a number of different sources, so some parts of the story don't fit together well.

Going through C.S. Lewis' space trilogy in audiobook form during work. Just started That Hideous Strength. Enjoyed Perelandra the most so far

I just finished reading I, Robot by Isaac Asimov. The chapter "Evidence" was eerily applicable to today's political climate. That's all I'll say about it because I don't want to get in trouble for discussing politics.

Despite how women are viewed, I enjoyed the book. I'll have to add more Asimov to my long list of books still to read.

For a more recent robot novel, I enjoyed this one, containing numerous nods to Asimvov and Heinlein, to both of whom it's dedicated:

Having just finished The Lost World by Conan Doyle (its a really good book by the way), I started The Lost World by Michael Crichton, and the Poacher's Handbook by Ian Niall

Thank you for mentioning Conan Doyle's The Lost World, and that you liked it.
The only A.C. Doyle works I have read are the Sherlock Holmes stories (all 56 short stories and the four novellas).
I'll pick up a copy of The Lost World sometime in the near future.

Also, both Asimov and Heinlein were not a little fond of the bazoom-y type ... 😄😉

Has anyone read the buried giant?
It's by Kazuo Ishiguro
I don't remember why I bought it so I want to know what it's about!

I've never read that particular book but I have read two others by him.
Excellent story teller.
I would suggest you just jump in with both feet (the proverbial "leap of faith") and embark on an adventure.

The only A.C. Doyle works I have read are the Sherlock Holmes

Doyle has several other worthwhile works. And his Brigadier Girard series is a pretty fun romp.

He always considered his 'other works' more important to him than Sherlock...in fact, he disliked Sherlock quite a bit... but it was his cash cow.
When he killed Sherlock off at the Reichenbach Falls, the public pitched such a fit he ultimately brought Sherlock back...though it is universally felt the returning Sherlock was never quite up to par with the one who died.

Anyway, several of his novels are worth the read as well.

One need not spend a lot to get hold of him. The Complete Works of Arthur Conan Doyle is available digitally from Amazon for a mere $2.49. Very worth the price to get him in hand.

A lot of Asimov is worth the read for me, and I've just readded a bunch to my digital library for when i retire from everything. (which really makes no sense, because I'll never retire, but hey... the thought is excuse enough to purchase, isn't it?)

When Doyle killed off Holmes in The Final Problem his reading public donned black armbands much as they would do had a real person died.
Also, you have to wonder how much of the "public pressure" that persuaded Doyle to resurrect Holmes was applied by his mother, Mary Doyle:

In 1891 he had written to his mother, “I think of slaying Holmes… and winding him up for good and all. He takes my mind from better things.”
His mother’s reply: “You won’t! You can’t! You mustn’t!”

I just looked through a list of Asimov's works of fiction (I believe he wrote more non-fiction than fiction) and identified about a dozen books that I had read, which were on my shelves at one time or another.
And (this is telling) I have little memory of any of the stories, except for the five works I mentioned previously, and a few of the Robot stories.
I recall at the time I was reading those stories, they never really engaged me. They were ... mildly interesting, but not "page-turners".
I know I re-read a book or two of his short stories, but I never re-read the novels that I have since given away.
I found some his non fiction more interesting.
This is not an indictment of his writing... just sayin' he's not real high on my list of Sci-fi authors... maybe middlin' or so (yeah, I know...sacrilege 🙄😄)

Finished 'That Hideous Strength' last night. Wasn't sure about it at first (especially right after Perelandra) but really got into it eventually. I think Lewis' concept of 'macrobes' is something we should be paying attention to, especially as we blindly march towards this whole AI thing.

Demian by Hermann Hesse. It's my favorite book ever, I think. So this is a re-read. I'm writing my research proposal right now and I want to explore the reasons why certain books become favorites, examine the emotional connections readers have with their favorite books, or analyze the impact of favorite books on readers' well-being. I'm gonna use research proposal help to explore existing studies, articles, and books that discuss the emotional and psychological effects of favorite books. Identify any gaps in the literature that your research can fill. I often use their help to save my time and get good grades in writing.

I bought it a few years ago but have yet to read it!

Recommended read for a sensitive young person. He was very popular among young people in the 60s and 70s. I read several of his back then.

I remember seeing posters someone put up in my college town advertising an easy chair for sale "Once sat in by Hermann Hesse!". 😄

Has anyone read the buried giant?

"In post-Arthurian Britain, the wars that once raged between the Saxons and the Britons have finally ceased. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set off to visit their son, whom they haven't seen in years. And, because a strange mist has caused mass amnesia throughout the land, they can scarcely remember anything about him. As they are joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share.

By turns savage, suspenseful, and intensely moving, The Buried Giant is a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory."

Just started the Hunger Games.

That book about Jazz from 1961 that my father bought, where I'd broken off reading when it got to a collection of (excerpted) essays by "cultural critics". Decided to continue, and unsurprisingly there's a lot of mystified, uncomprehending blather. The essays were written in the late '40's to late '50's - so they are "contemporaries" of the publication of LotR - and a lot of mystified, uncomprehending blather by critics about that. I then had the growing feeling that in both cases, some critics were guilty of the same snobbish sneer: "not really for adults, is it?" 🤬🤬🤬
