What Race is 👁️Sauron?

[Mischievious Merry]

Ok, here's what may be one of my silly questions.
What race was Sauron of?My sis thinks he was of man, what do you guys think?

[Aulë]

He is a Maia

[Isenho]

isn't he Elvish? yeah i think so because his ears...WHAT ThE! OF CoURSE HE's MAIA. duh! lol!

[Wynston]

Pip no need to apologize. Most folks here don't mind answering questions and educating. As was said, he was one of the Maia who flocked to Melkor and was the mightiest of his Lieutenants. (sp?)

[Wulf of Dunland]

He could take any form didnt he? Or was that Morgoth...

Wel, if it was Sauron, he could apear as an Elf, or a Man.

[Wynston]

I believe that Suaron could take many forms, fair or foul, before his physical body got destroyed in the downfall of Nuemenor. After that he always appeared dark and terrible.

[Mischievious Merry]

Ok,so, a maia is a elvish race?

[GoldenWood]

Maiar are Ainur, a kind of angelic beings created by Illuvatar. Valar are also Ainur but have more powers than Maiar. Maiar are like second to Valar and they assit Valar.

Sauron is a Maia who became bad and started serving Melkor (an evil Valar).

[Wulf of Dunland]

Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast and the other 2 (what are their names again?) wizards are also Maia if I'm correct.

[Aulë]

The other 2 were Alatar and Pallando (The 2 Blue Wizards)

[Éomond]

Gandalf(what was his real name?) was the wisest of the Maiar. Maia are not Elvish. They're kinda like Angels sorta but more "sprity"
The Sil. talks about them early in the book

That was his real name, as was Mithrandir for example. Many characters have many different names. All are real.

Well, not actually. His original name was Olórin, being the first name he was given by the Elves of Valinor. All other names were nicknames or epitaphs, like Mithrandir which means "Grey wanderer". (mith, 'grey'; randir, 'wanderer': compare with Quenya Rána, 'Wayward, Wanderer', one of the names for the Moon).

Reading order

I read Silmarilion right after the Hobbit, too. I was 12, I think. I was fortunate enough too find a copy in my thrift store. It is unbelievably good, MUCH more "mythy" than LOTR and exponentially beyond the Hobbit. if you're just a casual reader you might find it a bit dull...I loved it. I've read it at least 3 times, parts much more. Very tragic tone.
