Why are you asking this? Have you not read the book yet? The Two Towers makes it fairly clear she is a giant spider, therefore, *************** you should have noticed that. Therefore, I'll assume you are yet to read it, and you're picking up on things you are reading on the forum.

So, unless you are intent on spoiling the story for yourself, go away and read the book, and then come back. But, if you must know all these things before reading, go to www.glyphweb.com/arda to satisfy your curiousity.

Hey Morgulking don't do that!!!!!!!! Of course all may not have read the books but you have no right to call anyone a moron!! Can't you at least be polite when answering?? What kind of attitude towards people have you got? Don't you see that you may be insulting someone???

Well said, Hurin! People on the forum are of all different levels. Let's be a welcoming place where people feel they can ask questions.

You sicken me

You people go around flaunting your supposed Tolkien knowledge and being all high-and-mighty to anyone that is confused. Why not try to explain things instead of attacking people with your boorish words

You may be reffering to me there, I don't know, as it seems a message from MorgulKing has been deleted. Well, if that's directed at me, I am not implying I am superior or anything. It just strikes me as odd that someone would come here, without having read the book, and then ask questions that are obviously answered in it, if they would just read it.

It's true that the books do entail all of the answers to questions people might have, and that the experience of finding something out from the books themselves, the 'Source', is more enjoyable and fulfilling than hearing it from someone else. But I must say that although I understand your frustration, Craig, you did go about this the wrong way. But that's enough of that! :)

As was said, Shelob is supposedly the last offspring of Ungoliant to have survived the War of Wrath.
Ungoliant was a Maia, an angelic being created by Eru, who was corrupted by Melkor, who was arguably the most powerful Vala in Eä.
Omg, sorry for throwing names around like this, but it is a bit difficult to explain without going into great detail. And I'm sure nobody was trying to flaunt their knowledge.
:)

No Craig, it was only partially aimed at you, since your posts have more of a joking note, instead of pure sarcasm and spite...my post was directed rather atMorgulKing...but his post is deleted so nevermind ;)

I'm not really frustrated as such, if it annoyed me I just wouldn't bother replying. It just surprises me that someone would ask all these questions which are obviously answered in the text. Maybe I seemed a bit blunt, but I was merely explaining how he was wrong to ask these things. Anyway, we all know I'm too nice a guy to go criticising people who are not as well Tolkien-versed as myself ;)

Ok, at the time I was unaware what MorgulKing said, I have since been informed. Yes, I do often speak rather jokingly, but let's get this clear, I was not being completly negative, merely saying what he should do with a series of rhetorical questions.

And, yeah, I'm rather repeating myself now

Yes, Samwise was surely brave in taking out Shelob, or at least badly wounding her. Shows what he's made of, and his deep loyalty to Frodo. Tolkien made me feel like I was right there in the Lair.

When I said the Shelob was not as dramatic as a Balrog I did not intend to slight her. However, I do maintain that Balrogs have more of a sense of showmanship than Shelob, with their whips of fire and what not, while Shelob tends to kill in far less exciting ways. Rest assured, this particular Took is not so foolish as to take the spawn of Ungoliant lightly! ;)
