Indirectly mentioned in The Battle of the Five Armies and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Princess Dis was a dwarf woman in the royal line of Durin’s folks.
History
Dis was born in the Third Age in the Lonely Mountains. She was the daughter of King Thrain II and the younger sister of Thorin II Oakensheild and Frerin. Growing up, Dis was close to her brother Thorin which is evident in the way Thorin takes care of her sons. When she was ten, dragon Smaug took over Erebor, sacked the kingdom and drove her family into exile. Thus, she became the first sibling to grow up outside of Erebor. After the death of her husband, Dis gave birth to two children - Fili and Kili who were instrumental in helping Thorin in the quest to take Erebor back from Smaug. However, they get killed while trying to save their wounded uncle Thorin. Interestingly, Dis is the only dwarf woman who was given a name by Tolkein as a tribute to her sons’ heroic death in the Battle of The Five Armies. None of the other females in the dwarven family were seen by outsiders or mentioned in dwarven records. [1]
