Memoir in the Oakenshield's Early Days
Thorin II was famously known as the Oakenshield. He was the descendant of Thráin the second. His older brothers were Dis and Frerin, Kili, and Fili's uncle, and he was King Thrór's grandson. He was recognized for his doings as the Company's leader. He led an allied force composed of Dwarves, Elves, and Men in the last war involving the Penta armies who stormed the mountain kingdom to retrieve it from the dragon. In 2746 of the Third Age, he was born in the Lonely Mountains to Thrain II, a Dwarf prince. In the Third Age of 2770, Thorin and his allies, Lonely Mountain Dwarves were driven out at a young age by Smaug, the dragon. In his banishment, he flourished to be a competent warrior. During 2799 of the Third Age, he displayed his skills when Thorin joined without hesitation in the fight that happened in Azanulbizar. Together with one Dwarven infantry, he marched below Moria's eastward entrance. Somewhere in the chaos of the battle, his protection shattered. He did not have any other option but to use a branch of an oak tree spotted at the ground, acting as his shield. This incident gained him the name "Oakenshield," which continued to live through even in his death. After his father disappeared, in time, he became the exiled King of the Durin's Folk. It was later presumed that his father died in Dol Guldur dungeons.
During their trek towards their destination, His companions and he were confronted by spiders. The Elven King Thranduil found them and confined them afterward. They escaped the King's enclosure using the barrels, and they proceeded to the town immediately. The Lake-town people welcomed Thorin and his companions with warmth. They cheered the arrival of the Mountain King. After they successfully arrived at the Lonely Mountains. They all sent Bilbo there to scout. He ended up conversing with a recently awoken Smaug. A very angry Smaug went to lake town to avenge the betrayal. He apprehended that the town people assisted the intruders. Little did he know that he was walking to his death. Bard was waiting and stabbed the exposed part on Smaug's vulnerable side with the final remaining arrowhead that he had. The lord of Lake-Town gave Smaug the fatal arrow shot. Smaug was finally dead.
The Lake-town people asked their King for a portion of the dragon's unguarded treasure. They wanted payment for the near obliteration of their home since a portion of the dragon's hoard originated from their previous capital. After successfully reclaiming the wealth of his family, Thorin was consumed and destroyed by greed. He was infuriated by the proximity of Thranduil. Out of spite, he denied sharing any ounce of the treasure. Meanwhile, Thorin was determined to locate stone by looking inch by inch in the hoard. He led the charge of his companions. Little did he know that Bilbo discovered the stone. He stealthily took it to Thranduil and Bard to utilize it as part of their bargaining chip. When Thorin discovered Bilbo's doings, he was wrapped in rage and accused his comrade as a renegade. The developing disagreement among the three armies, because of the unclaimed wealth, is expected to end in carnage.

The developing disagreement among the three armies, because of the unclaimed wealth, is expected to end in carnage. They could not stop. Before it could start, they were suddenly signaled by the arrival of the army consisting of wargs and goblins. Instead of fighting each other, they formed forces to crush their mutual enemies.
This scene right here was famously known to be a war involving Penta armies. Throughout the fight, Thorin commanded a full-on onslaught that confirmed his charm as an influential leader. Thorin came charging from their point of entry and helped a great deal when the goblins were trying to overwhelm them. He was fighting bravely with all his might, but he sustained a fatal blow that left him injured. Beorn was the one who spotted him and took him away from the battle. Right before his death came, he gained his harmony to Bilbo and praised the Hobbit's courage and moral sense. He apologized for the discretion he caused. He was remorseful of his sharp tongue since he appreciated his comrade's generous purposes now. His final words were his understanding of the materialistic aspect of life brings sadness in the world. If only people value the beauty of the world, he thought that the world would be better. But he must leave the world and bid farewell to his companions.
The terror alone could break a young prince's spirit. Unfortunately, nobody came to help the remaining Dwarves. One noble race has been driven into exile. He became the commander of Dwarves Company. He was resolute to take back his home from the monster that ruined it and caused suffering to his people. In the "An Unexpected Journey" in The Hobbit movies, King Thranduil did not help his Thorin's granny to save their city from the dragon, and he did not try providing any help to the exiles afterward. Thorin did not forget this. He despised Thranduil so much. It has reached a moment that he almost refused Orcrist.
In the primary installment of the adaptation, a solid war ax made in iron was being wielded by Thorin. It was later called deathless. Azog has only one purpose of his relentless pursuit for Thorin. He wants to make sure to erase all the Durin line once and for all. Azog is a commander of the Orcs. This scene was contradicting Tolkien's writings, Dain Ironfoot already executed Azog before any of these happened on The Hobbit. Azanulbizar Battle [3] was where Thorin cut off the warlord's arm and portrayed it in the movie. Azog survived the threat of Thorin and his allies, and he was able to take his vengeance during Erebor's famous quest. It was shown in the primary installment of the movie. The incident in which Thorin earned his designation as Oakenshield during the Azanulbizar fight in his match against Azog. He did not have another option but to use a branch from an oak tree to both fight and defend himself.
In the secondary movie, after the fight with Mirkwood's spiders and the arrest by the wooden elves. Legolas took Orcists from Thorin. Thorin had gotten a sword that was created by human hands. He obtained in Erebor's raid in the armory of Laketown. For the first two installments, Thorin appeared using various weaponry despite his possession of Orcrist. He wielded a bow, ax, and the famous branch of the oaken. In the primary two films, Thorin appeared wielding various kinds of arsenal aside from Orcrist; he uses an ax, arrow, and an oak shield. Thorin appeared in the movies as friendly, but his hostility to the Elves also showed. After the first movie, he became very set on to reclaim the stone and to have possession of the dragon's treasure hoard.
Because of his greediness, he was willing to sacrifice Bilbo just to get it. Balin was the one who recognized the signs of Thorin's sickness. Balin confirmed that Thorin was infected with dragon sickness. Thorin was starting to act like the dragon. When he found out what Bilbo did, he almost strangled him to death. He exiled and intimidated Dwalin. He refused aid to his allies and his cousin to fight the Orcs when the battle was already starting to explode. His associates were following his commands out of fear. He barricaded everyone on the mountain, including his allies. It was apparent that no matter what they do, they are still greatly outnumbered by the Orcs. Thranduil has no other option but to retreat for his troops to regroup. The defenders left were even more nervous by knowing this. Kili, Fili, and Dwalin are Thorin's most renowned fighters in his arsenal. He sent them to Ravenhill to hunt Azog and cause disruption to the Orcs.
Thorin encountered a delusion of the dragon attempting to slaughter him. This was his breaking point in returning to his consciousness. He commanded his hopeful companions. They have joined Dain's forces, trying their very best to push back through the Orcs. Fili, Dwalin, and Kili are considered Thorin's best warriors. He took them and went straight to Ravenhill. They were seeking out to murder Azog and made the Orcs submit to panic, perhaps solidifying their victory. They found Ravenhill's deserted watchtowers. Thorin was feeling uncertain. He orders his nephews to go after them but was strictly advised not to attack. Bilbo came a little too late. Thorin was already trapped in a surprise attack waiting for him. Azog found Fili and threw him off from the tower.
Thorin's Crusade for the Mountain
Thorin's father made a map and gave it to him in 2941 of the Third Age. He brought his group of skilled dwarves he knows, which Gandalf the wizard advised him to do. They went to see Bilbo Baggins and recruited him to be the thief for their purpose. Thorin intended to obtain the wealth from the dragon by invading the Lonely Mountains. On their journey to the Lonely Mountains, Bilbo, Gandalf, and the other dwarves experienced a never-ending facing of dangers. They survived the surprise of spiders, orcs, trolls, and wargs. It was the time when the Orcrist and Glamdring were both uncovered in a hoard of trolls. They retired in Rivendell, and Elrond discovered how to translate what appeared in Thorin's father's map. [1]During their trek towards their destination, His companions and he were confronted by spiders. The Elven King Thranduil found them and confined them afterward. They escaped the King's enclosure using the barrels, and they proceeded to the town immediately. The Lake-town people welcomed Thorin and his companions with warmth. His Temperament
It is no surprise that Thorin was described as intelligent, noble, brave, vindictive, and somewhat headstrong. Even if he was represented with rank and power, he is still down to earth and treats everybody with the dignity they deserved. He considers them as family. Many respected and admired him everywhere in the world. Thorin was greedy at first, and it was known for his family to be greedy. His weakness in possessions of treasures was undeniable that he also considered the well-being of others. Thorin's character was tied to his braveness and his willingness to be selfless in times that he needs to be. The only exception is what he did before the war with the Penta armies. Right before he died, he appeared to be the opposite of his best self. He was stern and was acting very unreasonable. He was consumed and rooted in his need to reclaim the stone. It was considered as the last remaining legacy of his lost family, and the stone is a portion of it he truly values. It was personal. During his very final time after the fight, his real character reappeared. He realized what he did, and he begged Bilbo for his pardon. Thorin knew that his greed consumed him, and he wishes to be like Bilbo, his innocence to be specific. He showed his grief and regretted that he will never have experienced it happening to him. Bilbo recognized Thorin as an exceptional comrade and brother, and his passing had left an intense impact on Bilbo.Thorin's Weapons of Choice
Thorin used some usual weapons like swords, axes, and arrows. But he was much more noted when he used Orcrist, which is an Elven sword. He only found it while he was on his way to the mountains. When the confining of Thranduil occurred, Thorin's Orcrist was seized by the wood elves of the forest. At his funeral, Thranduil decided that it was even apt to give Thorin his sword and the heirloom of his family, stone.Depiction in Adaptations
Under Bass films or Rankin films, Thorin was voiced over by Conreid, Hans. It was an animation variant of The Hobbit, which was released in 1977. For three years, 2012-2014, Richard Armitage played Thorin in the film trilogy. [2] The studio published a statement regarding Thorin's character in the trilogy. When he was still young, he became a Dwarf Prince. Later on, he witnessed the devastation the dragon brought to the Dwarf King of the Lone Mountain. The terror alone could break a young prince's spirit. Unfortunately, nobody came to help the remaining Dwarves. One noble race has been driven into exile. He became the commander of Dwarves Company. Thorin's Weapons of Choice History
Thorin entered and was planning to save Kili, but before he could make a move. He ended up being stabbed by his enemy. Thorin only withstands because of the help of Legolas, who slays Bolg. Thorin eventually fought with Azog. They were at the end of an iced waterfall. Azog found a weapon and used it as his flail. He smashed the ice but resulted in him falling to the falls and was quickly drowning because of the heaviness of the flail. Thorin thought that it was over until Azog surprised him and stabbed him in his foot. Thorin was immobilized, and when Azog landed a second blow, it inflicted a fatal wound directly on his chest. Thorin had one shot and stabbed Azog with his full might and killed him almost instantly. Thorin had held on only to be seen by Bilbo.
He made his harmony from him and bid his last goodbye before surrendering to death. His allies showed honor to him by kneeling. It was the sign of recognition he truly deserved. On their way to Misty Mountains, the Company was seized by the goblins. Thorin's Orcrist was also confiscated. They were all taken to face the King of the goblins. Grinnah, one of the minions, discovered the presence of Orcrist. It resulted to execute all the dwarves. The wizard came to their rescue and saved them from near death. Nori returned the sword to Thorin. He took revenge and wounded him gravely. He used Orcrist and his oaken shield in his match against Azog.
Almost overwhelmed by the enemies, the great eagles arrived to help the practically defeated Dwarves. Thorin lost his guard when he was picked up by an eagle. Thorin was seen using his new sword, not until Mirkwood. He has slain the group of spiders with it. The Elves caught them, and Legolas, in turn, seized his blade. Trapped with no options, they were able to utilize the barrels left unguarded. It resulted in what was known to be as the chase with the barrels. Before escaping, Thorin managed to retrieve the confiscated weapons. On his way out, he slew some of the guards. His allies asked help in the nearby town of the lake. Thorin used his sword on his way to the Mountains to get his revenge.
During the war with the Penta armies, Thorin warned Thranduil immediately by letting a warning blast come loose. That was his warning to the King not to engage. Thorin commanded and led his companions into war with the Penta armies. He started slaughtering many Orcs with his sword and shield. He was unstoppable. Thorin was caught in a fight with the Orcs' commander, and it was a blessing in disguise when Legolas found them and helped Thorin fight off the Goblin mercenaries. In the ultimate fight, Thorin was brave enough to face Azog.
This incident was the final match Thorin was involved in. He got a fatal wound that he could not recover from. He was able to impale Azog with force so strong that his blade pierced through the ice underneath them. Thorin succumbed to his passing just right after he asked forgiveness from Bilbo. During his funeral, as a sign of his honor, Thranduil returned the Orcrist and the heirloom stone to Thorin's grave. Thorin had endured in the end and showed his true self to his allies and enemies alike. He was indeed the King of the Mountain. He reclaimed his honor that he deserved from all of his struggles.
