Ents

The Ents of Middle-earth are an ancient race, known to the Elves as the Onodrim - Sindarin for "Tree-hosts." They were one of Yavanna's adornments during the Creation Song (Quenta Silmarillion - "Of Aule and Yavanna" chapter 2). The Ents are referred to in The Lord Of The Rings as "ancient shepherds of the trees," their role being both guardians and protectors against destruction. Ents are sentient. In The Silmarillian we read they would arrive when Yavanna's thought "called the spirits from afar" and those spirits came to inhabit flora and fauna alike. Ents were taught speech by the Elves (who wanted to speak to everything) - appearing after the Elves (the Firstborn) but before Man (the Followers.) Treebeard, called by Gandalf "the oldest living thing" at the time of The Lord Of The Rings, [1] described this work of the Elves as "a great gift that could not be forgotten."

Ents are beings still similar to the trees they once were, and are of a great variety in appearance, just as those trees are. They vary in height, leaf, limb, color, and numbers of toes and fingers. A single Ent may well shepherd a specific grove or section of trees. Quickbeam watched over the rowan trees, and appeared the same as they; tall and slim. Ents were tough-skinned, and very strong. Pippin and Merry described their strength as able to crush metal in a second. Ents tore solid rock apart like breaking bread into crumbs. In the Lore, Fangorn Forest is the last surviving part of the ancient forests in the Third Age, and the place we meet the Ents in Tolikien's work - though some survived in other areas similar to the old forest.

An Account of the Ent's Good Old Days

The Tree Shepherds by Ted Nasmith.
The beginning of the Ents can be proven by the proof that can only be located in Valaquenta. Yavanna is a Valar queen. She was known for being a fanatic of everything that originates on earth. Manwë was the original King of all. He was the Lord of Arda's realm. [2] There ensued a conversation between the two. After Aulë, Yavanna's spouse privately attempts to produce those Dwarves. He warned her that Ilúvatar's children, who are Men, Elves, and Dwarves, would relentlessly abuse her makings for their interest. He also added that even though they would act that way, he was confident that they would treat her creations with honor and appreciation. Yavanna's realm was utterly defenseless. Her apparent desperation forced her to appeal with Manwë. She said that her heart is full of worry about what's to occur. She considers her creation very significant to her, and the thought of others having them is unforgivable. Manwë responded by asking her a question, of everything that she values, what is the thing that she would protect from her enemies' exploit? She answered with a conviction that the Kelvar could choose to escape or protect themselves, but the remaining Olvar could not. She was very protective of the trees.

Manwë, while pondering, the Ainur sound overcomes his perception of it, and he grants her petition. He said that when her children would wake up, Yavanna's will wake as well. This act will order spirits from far away. They would join the kevlar and olva. And their anger towards many will be feared by all. Yavanna, upon returning to her husband. She reported to Aulë. She was explaining to him, Eru is abundant. Let our children be aware of it. Someone will walk in the forest that has wrath that can scare away. Their story is still a mystery no one can solve. Their history was hard to trace. In past ages, they supposedly existed in and defended the vast middle earth's forests. When First Age was almost over, they have momentarily emerged in some tales.

They were infiltrating a group of Dwarves. Lúthien and Beren were given the reason for summoning them. There was a point when Eriador belonged to the vast forest, and it was part of the region of Treebeard. In the early years, he remembered it for its glory before the enormous forest was cut down by Númenóreans. During the Second Age's seventeenth century, some parts were obliterated from a gruesome battle of Sauron and the Elves of the seventeenth century of SA. The oldest Ent stated, and it was confirmed by the statements of the bi-elf who was Elrond. He made his point known as Elrond's group of the council. He stated that there was a time when a single squirrel can take a seed from one tree to the other, traveling to their place to the vast sea. It further supported the idea that Eriador was formerly an individual enormous ancient forest. The Forest of Fangorn was considered the easternmost of it.

This statement was from Treebeard's recollection. Pippin and Merry knew about the Ent's full force because of Treebeard boasting it to them. Ents were more potent compared to trolls. In the days of the elders known as the First Age, Morgoth imitated them but could not even come close to their potential. He differentiates his theory with how Morgoth’s version of the Elves were the Orcs. There were entwives then, which basically means ent-women. They enjoyed planting and controlling things. They began to go as far away than they possibly can due to these. They eventually moved further off of the region. It was right across the Anduin great river. The place would be known as the Lands of Brown. Sauron ended up destroying this area, and the wives of the ents completely vanished without any trace. The ents never stopped looking for their wives, but they had never seen their faces again. The Ents sing that there would be a day that they long to take a glimpse at each other. In the Ring's fellowship, Sam says that Hal, who is his cousin, witnessed an occurrence from the northern part of their home, where a walking tree is.

The Entwives.
While Merry and Pippin recounted the oldest ent regarding the incident, Hal saw. The oldest ent says the lost ents would want to possess that land. He was suggesting that what Hal saw was either Huorn or an Entwive. It is acceptable to assume that with the disappearance of the she-ents and their gradual deterioration with time. The quantities of their species have been affected over time. They had diminished by the time age three ended. Treebeard was persistent in stating that there were no ents upon mid earth. He added that there had not been one for a long time. They disappeared out of thin air and will never return. Tolkien was consistent in keeping the mystery of the Entwives. He did not reveal what exactly transpired to them. It was included from his writings, and he said that the disappearance of Entwives was permanent, and the reason is the destruction of their gardens during their ultimate allegiance war. In the second installment of his books entitled The Two Towers, the ents are portrayed as very patient, conscious beings.

They become enraged at Saruman because his armies continued to cut their trees down. The Entwives perceived the vast number of trees cut was murder to them. The Ents assembled an Entmoot. It was a conference of the Fangorn Forest Ents to address the case of waging war against Sauron. After a lengthy discussion, they concluded to slaughter Isengard and command a pursuit toward it. From their understanding, this deliberation is already a swift action to them. Treebeard was the one who led them to war. He was the most experienced Ent there is. They were guided by Peregrin and Meriadoc. They defeated their opponents in a full onslaught attack. Saruman is trapped in a tower with no options to choose from. Through the attack on Isengard, Ents flooded the place. They found a way to destroy the dams constructed by Saruman's followers. After the battle, Isengard turned into an area known as Watchwood. The Ents relocated countless of their beloved plants at their new place. Isengard was unrecognizable.

Their Spoken Tongue

Ents expressed terms forming a sluggish and comprehensive lexicon. It appears that an old style of Eldarin was the basis of their language foundation. Sindarin and Quenya, later on, enhanced their language further. They included many uncommon tree-ish inclusions. Two variants of their language can be recognized:

The Former Language: Old Ent Language

Old Ent language was the principal language of the Ents. It was known to be lengthy and loud; it was considered a language with tonality. It is never proven a person who is not an Ent would even utter Old Ent language accurately since it was a form of communication filled with detailed vowel tones, and it was very wordy. Only Ents conversed in it. Like what the dwarven did with their own, but because no other beings could comprehend Old Ent language. The only exceptions were the people of the Fangorn Forest trees. [3] They could comprehend the old language and speak fluently with others and with each other using it as their dialect. The only actual example of a statement that was assumed to mean the name of the hill. It's quite long for it to only translate to the word hill. It was also a possibility that it converted only a portion of a distinct heap. It was reported as an incorrect sampling of translation.

The Elves, who are considered linguistics experts, could not also determine how to understand Old Ent language. [4] They did not try to report it because of its complexity, sound, and form. The rule construction of their old language was even more complicated. It was actually unusual, often explained as long. It always turns into a prolonged review of a problem. It was also believed that the Old Ent language might not have a term for a simple aye or nay. Their responses are always a lengthy speech that would answer such questions. The questioned ent will have a lengthy version of whether he agreed or not to the one who requested the inquiry. He was considered as a particularly careless Ent. He always answers a matter before some other Ent has to finish. In his defense, it may have been after an hour or so. The Ents stipulated a general rule that no one would say something in the old language merely it was necessary or meriting practicing for an extended time to answer. They also had a standard for their ordinary language capacity; they fell back on to the new language.

The Latter: New Ent Language

New ent language was never identified in itself in the manuscript. Due to Ents interacting with the Elves, they acquired so much information from them. The Ents' discovery of the Elven language to be a beautiful language enticed them to adopt it as their own after their style to daily practice. Nevertheless, it turned out that they adapted the lexicon from Quenya to Old Ent language and applied it to grammatical construction. Compared to the old one, the specific words of the new one were easy to translate. Thus, Treebeard speaking is the ease of translating. In connection, they developed long flowing sentences of unnecessary parts of speech that could still be extended for the next hour or so. For instance, when Treebeard mainly wants to tell Pippin and Merry something simple, but it went on for a few minutes. Far from the old language, an outsider understandably could talk in a new language without being one. Even when expressing themselves in the natural language, which is known as Westron, Ents still slipped the manner of modifying it to their grammar. The act of copying complex parts of speech used to show complex variations of meaning. Onodrim is the Elven term for Ents, and the singular form is Onod. Tolkien's frustration in Macbeth later became his inspiration for Isengard's fall and ruin. Tolkien was less than thrilled at the scene when Birnham came to the castle. In his defense, it only was perceived by men performing with decorative leaves on their heads. He agreed on to himself that when he will do it, he would do it way differently.

The Ent's Origin

It was derived from the Anglo Saxons, where it translates to a giant. He may have obtained the term from the poetry of the Anglo Saxons excerpt The Sacred Tree. Eald enta, on the other hand, translates to the giants' old works. It used to describe the Old-fashioned Roman remains, which you may read on Orthanc. The omnipresent of all beasts in both fiction and myth, but is secondary to the fire breathing dragon, are the Ents. Based on usage throughout history, the term Ent can mean to any quantity of huge, unevenly human-like beings. It is involved in so many characters like the giants, trolls, and orcs—even the giant from the classic writing Beowulf is considered one. The most common beings in fantasy, folklore, or mythology are ents. It has existed alongside princesses, knights, wizards, and dragons. They were described differently from the traditional ones. His was resembling as human-like trees since the trees can speak of other folktales that have inspired them. It is a word that is almost connected exclusively to Tolkien's work. The utilization of the word in modern times has lost its original meanings.
