Haldir was one of the Galadhrim, a Wood-Elf of Lothlórien, a marchwarden, who along with others, guarded the forest's northern borders. He was the leader of the Elves who intercepted the Company of the Ring when they entered those woods after their flight from Khazad-dûm (Moria).
The Story
Haldir, with his two brothers Orophin and Rúmil, encountered the Fellowship of the Ring shortly after they entered Lothlórien after the tragic loss of Gandalf in Moria. The date was 15 January, 3019 of the Third Age (1419, Shire-reckoning).[1]
Familiar with the Common Speech due to his travels outside the Wood, Haldir did the talking. The Elves had heard rumors of the coming of the companions from messengers of Elrond who had passed by previously. Haldir was surprised at seeing Hobbits though, as the Elves did not know any still existed.
At first he was reluctant to let a Dwarf pass through their lands due to the laws of the land, but the concern is overcome due to the company Gimli is with. But Haldir then states he can only pass if blindfolded - a difficulty overcome by the whole company agreeing to be blindfolded if Gimli had to be. Thus, eyes covered, the company headed toward the center of the realm with the three Elves.
The Elves escorted the Fellowship to Caras Galadhon, the city of the Galadhrim, on the 15th and 16th of January to meet the Lord and Lady of the land, Celeborn and Galadriel. Along the way, a group of passing Elves brought Haldir news the group was to be allowed to walk free. Haldir himself takes the blindfold off Gimli, apologizing for the situation that brought it about.
When they arrive at Cerin Amroth, the hill in the midst of the land where Celeborn and Galadriel are, it is he too, who takes the company in for their introductions to them. It is also Haldir who, 30 days later (16 February),[2] is sent to guide them to the boats on their departure from the land.

Character Traits
Haldir appears to be a servant thoroughly devoted to his duties and responsibilities, as he works to insure the laws of the land are adhered to and upheld. He is obedient immediately upon receiving word that the Company was to be freed. His humility and ability to adjust to unfolding circumstances are shown as he apologizes for the inconveniences of things as they had unfolded.
