Turgon

Turgon was an Elven King of Noldor who lived in the Hidden City of Gondolin. He also held titles like the Lord of the Elves of Nevrast and the High King of the Noldor in Middle Earth.

Biography

Turgon was born in Y.T. 1300, in Aman, Valinor to Fingolfin and Anairë. He was married to Elenwë of the Vanyar. The Elven couple had a daughter named Idril. He was often quoted as the Wise and held the staff of doom while on his throne.

History

In Aman

Turgon had a cordial relationship with the Finarfin's sons of Valinor. He, his friend Finrod and his father Fingolfin were initially against Fëanor's interest in pursuing Morgoth after the theft of the Silmarils. But the Noldorin still departed from Noldor and chose to live in exile. Turgon joined suit along with his family. Unfortunately, they lost Elenwë while crossing the dangerous Helcaraxë. He saved his daughter from the bitter waters and reached Nevrast. He was hostile towards the Fëanors after the Helcaraxe accident.

Building of Gondolin

After reaching Middle-earth, Turgon and his subjects settled at Vinyamar, Nevrast. Around F.A. 50, Ulmo advised Turgon to build a remote community and guided him to the valley of Tumladen. With the skilled Noldor's help, he created the Gondolin amid the Encircling Mountains. After its completion in F.A. 116, he moved his people to Tumladen, abandoning Vinyamar. He left behind a sword, mail, and helm. He completely ignored the earlier dreadful events in his life and became the King of the Gondolindrim. He pursued his passion for embellishments and created Glingal and Bethel. Aredhel, Turgon's sister, set out to meet the Sons of Fëanor after staying in the newly constructed Gondolin for over two hundred years. Around FA 400, Aredhel came back after suffering a series of unfortunate events. She had a son named Maeglin, who was crowned the Lord of the House of the Mole after Eöl and Aredhel's death. Maeglin had feelings for Idril, which were not accepted by Turgon.

Doom of the Noldor

Goldin was well-governed by Turgon until the Battle of the Sudden Flame in FA 456. Thorondor surrendered Fingolfin's body to Turgon. Two years later, Turgon took in Húrin and Huor, saved by the Eagles. [1] The two brothers fostered a close bond with Turgon but returned back to Dor-lómin after a year. Turgon bumped into the two brothers again in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Huor requested Turgon to leave the spot when Fingon was killed. However, with the help of the men of the House of Hador in the Fen of Serech, the Gondolindrim escaped. At the end of the battle, Huor was killed, and Húrin captured. The Noldor's armies and their allies were protected from complete destruction by Turgon and the Union of Maedhros. The territory of Fingon came under Turgon's realm, and he has crowned the High King of the Noldor. [2] Around FA 496, Turgon predicted the future of Noldor and its forthcoming doom. He sent several boats to seek Valar's mercy, and they were wrecked. Only Voronwe, one of Turgon's coveted mariners, survived the Shadowy Seas with whom arrived Tuor, the son of Huor. Tuor advised Turgon to leave the Hidden City and flee to Sirion's Havens as per Ulmo's prophecy. Turgon became overly obsessed with his kingdom, and he rejected the council of the Vala. He blocked the Seven Gates and appointed Thorond as the only envoy. In the meantime, seven years after his arrival to The Hidden City, Tuor married Idril with the blessings of Turgon. Turgon had immense respect for Tuor. Morgoth discovered the Hidden City with the help of the treacherous Maeglin. He attacked the city in F.A. 510 and slain Turgon. However, a group of Gondolindrim sustained the Fall of Gondolin and arrived at the Mouths of Sirion. They were later ruled by Ereinion Gil-galad. The Elf who brought salvation to Middle Earth was Turgon's grandson Eärendil.
