Yep... death is usually a problem... and a rather pesky one most of the time. 🙄He should have kept to his original intention of eight books, in my opinion (aside from the death problem). He had so many plot lines going that the later books succumbed to inertia.
Just now looked it up. Sounds like very good read. Thanks for mentioning it."Two years before the mast" by Richard Dana. It's been a long time since I read it, and I am amazed by how good it is.
I actually am departing for Antarctica next week. Shackleton's book is one of the ones I am taking with meJust now looked it up. Sounds like very good read. Thanks for mentioning it.
If you haven't read Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage I recommend it.
Shackleton's ill-fated voyage to the Antarctic has been told/documented by several writers.
I read THIS ONE by Alfred Lansing, considered one of the two best accounts of the voyage.
(I believe several other books about the voyage are mentioned somewhere on this forum....)
Martin Rudwick is a great palaeontologist, read his book on brachiopods as an undergraduate, and discovered his insightful works on the history of geology and the interaction of geology and Christianity some years laterCurrently reading this book, which purports to share (in Ent's words) the history of the evolution of thinking about the earth, our understanding of it, including its age, development, etc., and the impacts those things had in the "revolution of man's thinking."
Ent has no opinion - certainly no perspective - regarding its overall value at this point. But it is interesting.

Love that! It's why when we were working outside in the Arctic we usually had an armed guard!
