Size is not what matters. Mumakils (or oliphaunts) are elephant-like, I think. Larger, stronger, and smarter perhaps. But still elephant-like. But Balrogs! Well, you can't know what size they are. But no man of the Third Age could defeat a Balrog, while the First Age Elves could. The elves were stronger!
Only 2 elves were able to defeat the balrogs, and the orcs and trolls fought by the high elves of the first age were weaker than the uruks and olog-hais of the third age.
 
Did Tolkien once describe Legolas as "immensely strong"?
