Among the Hobbits of the Shire, the Baggins family was very prominent. They were known to be very respectable and they were also wealthy. They were usually called the “Baggins of Hobbiton” as most of the family have lived in or nearby Hobbiton.

History

The Baggins family can trace their origins back to Balbo Baggins. Balbo was the first recognized Baggins in history. He was born in Hobbiton of the Shire. Bilbo Baggins was the great grand-son of Balbo. Frodo’s father, Drogo, was also a great-grandson of Balbo. When Bilbo and Frodo sailed to Valinor, the only recorded Baggins left were the family of Posco Baggins, Bilbo’s great-nephew. There were still some descendants from Balbo Baggins, but they belonged to the Sackville-Bagginses branch of the family. Pippin and his wife, Meriadoc Brandybuck also were under the Baggins Family Tree due through interfamilial marriages so their descendants were also counted. (Pippin is Frodo’s second cousin once-removed).

Etymology

The name Baggins is a Westeros name, Labingi, which means “bag.” Translated to English, you get the words “Baggins.”

Notable Members of the Baggins Family

  • Balbo Baggins - Born in TA 2767, Balbo was the first Baggins to be recorded. He is considered as the ancestor and founder of the Baggins of Hobbiton. Balbo took Berylla Boffin as his wife. Their marriage resulted in five children: Pansy, Mungo, Ponto, Lily, and Largo. From these children, the family bloodline of the Baggins grew in numbers.
  • Mungo Baggins - Mungo is Bilbo’s grandfather. He is the eldest child of Balbo and Berylla. Mungo took Laura Grubb as his wife. Their marriage resulted in five children: Bungo, Belba, Longo, Linda, and Bingo.
  • Bungo Baggins - Bungo is Bilbo’s father. Bungo married Belladonna Took. Bungo was the Hobbit who built the extravagant Bag End Hobbit hole under the hill. The beautiful residence was built in honor of his wife and garnered the envy of most of the Hobbits in the Shire.
  • Belladonna Took Baggins - Belladonna is the mother of Bilbo. Gandalf was very fond of her. When she died, Bilbo inherited Bag End.
  • Bilbo Baggins - Bilbo is the first-ever Baggins to leave the Shire to go on an epic adventure. Gandalf, who was a friend of Bilbo’s mother, was able to observe how Bilbo was a curious and adventurous child. It was probably Bilbo’s adventurous spirit that made Gandalf invite him to join them in the Quest of Erebor. However, when he came back from the Quest of Erebor, people found him to be an eccentric character and called him “Mad Baggins” behind his back.
  • Frodo Baggins - Frodo is the younger cousin of Bilbo. Bilbo adopted Frodo when Frodo’s parents died. As a result, Frodo became the only heir of Bilbo’s wealth. Frodo shared the same birthday with Bilbo. By the time of Bilbo’s Farewell Party, Bilbo was turning 111 while Frodo was turning 33. Bilbo left Bag End and the ring to Frodo before he left for Rivendell. Bilbo intended to spend his last years with the Elves. Like Bilbo, he also left the Shire to go on a quest with Gandalf.

Other Members of the Baggins Family

  • Rosa Baggins - Rosa is an ancestor of Frodo’s friends, Pippin and Mary. Rosa’s parents are Ponto Baggins and Mimosa Bunce. Rosa has a brother named Polo. She married Hildigrim Took.
  • Laura Baggins - Laura is Bilbo’s grandmother. Aside from Bungo, she gave birth to four other kids: Longo, Belba, Bingo, and Linda.
  • Linda Baggins - She is the aunt of Bilbo Baggins. Linda took Bodo Proudfoot as her husband. Their marriage gave them one son: Odo.
  • Bingo Baggins - Bingo is the cousin of Bilbo. He married Chica Chubb, and they had a son and named him Falco Chubb-Baggins. Bingo is the brother of Bungo.
  • Polo Baggins - Polo is the son of Ponto Baggins. He has two children, which he named Prisca and Posco.
  • Fosco Baggins - Fosco is the grandfather of Frodo.
  • Drogo Baggins - He is the father of Frodo Baggins. Both he and his wife, Primula, died due to drowning. They were testing a boat in the Baranduin when it happened.
  • Daisy Baggins - Daisy is Frodo’s cousin. Dudo Baggins, who was Drogo’s brother, is Daisy’s father. She later took Griffo Boffin as her husband.
  • Angelica Baggins - Angelica is the niece of Bilbo Baggins. Her father is Ponto Baggins II. Angelica was known to be a selfish Hobbit who was also very vain. During Bilbo’s Farewell Party, Bilbo gave Angelica a round convex mirror to suit her vanity.
  • The Sackville-Baggins - The Sackville-Baggins branch of the Baggins family was created when Longo Baggins married Camelia Sackville. Camellia is the sole heiress of the Sackville family. The name Sackville is actually a known aristocratic name during the time of Tolkien - especially when it came to double-barrelled names. He probably used it with a more mundane name like Baggins to imply the contrast and the snobbish nature of the Sackville-Baggins family.
  • Otho Sackville-Baggins - Otho adopted both names of his parents. He married Lobelia Bracegirdle. Otho had the ambition to be next in line to Bilbo as the head of the Baggins clan. In fact, when Bilbo disappeared, he and his wife tried to claim Bag End, only to find that it was left to Frodo. They were able to move in only when Frodo sold it to them. If that happened, Lotho would have been known with the name as Baggins-Sackville-Baggins.
  • Lobelia Sackville-Baggins - Lobelia is the wife of Otho. Before leaving, Bilbo gave Lobelia a box of silver spoons. At the time of the War of the Ring, Lobelia opposed the wizard Saruman, and she was imprisoned for it. She was freed from prison after the Scouring of the Shire. After that, Lobelia returned Bag End to Frodo and returned to where her relatives lived.
  • Lotho Sackville-Baggins - Lotho is the only son of Otho and Lobelia. He became an ally of Saruman at the time of the War of the Ring. Saruman buys pipeweed from Lotho, and Lotho uses the money to purchase land in Southfarting. With the help of the Ruffians, he was able to capture and dispose of Will Whitfoot, the Shire’s mayor. With the mayor gone, Lotho declared himself as the Chief Shirriff. The Shire was industrialized under his leadership and Lotho called himself The Boss. When Saruman took over, Lotho lost his position of power and was killed by Saruman’s servant, Grima Wormtongue.
